Global warming? No, actually we're cooling, claim scientists

A cold Arctic summer has led to a record increase in the ice cap, leading experts to predict a period of global cooling. Read more Telegraph

GUARDIAN CLIMATE U-TURN: Cooling Pacific has dampened global warming

Fiona Harvey in The Guardian, 28 August 2013 reports that research explains why changes in tropical waters could be responsible for recent 'pause' in rising temperatures.

A few months ago weather forecaster Joe Bastardi discussed the cooling of the Pacific Ocean. The Guardian is just catching up with this news.

Cooling waters in the tropical Pacific Ocean appear to be a major factor in dampening global warming in recent years, scientists said on Wednesday.

Their work is a big step forward in helping to solve the greatest puzzle of current climate change research – why global average surface temperatures, while still on an upward trend, have risen more slowly in the past 10 to fifteen years than previously.

Waters in the eastern tropical regions of the Pacific have been notably cooler in recent years, owing to the effects of one of the world's biggest ocean circulatory systems, the Pacific decadal oscillation.

Many people are aware of the El Niño and La Niña weather systems, which affect the Pacific and bring hotter and stormier or cooler weather in cycles of just a few years, and can have a strong effect on global weather. But few are aware that both of these systems are just part of the much bigger Pacific decadal oscillation, which brings warmer and cooler weather over decades.

The system is now in a cooling phase, scientists have noted, which could last for years. The last such phase was from the 1940s to the 1970s.

'Uncertain' Science: Judith Curry's Take On Climate Change

Climate scientist Judith Curry believes that if climate scientists more readily would acknowledge the inherent uncertainties of the issue, skeptics would more likely accept the established central tenets of global warming.

TIMES LEADER: PROTEST VS TRUTH IN THE BATTLE OF BALCOMBE

In the Battle of Balcombe, Britain’s need for a sensible energy policy is pitted against a chorus of angry nonsense

Hundreds of protesters may force the Cuadrilla oil exploration company to continue to suspend operations today at its site near Balcombe in West Sussex. If so they will claim a victory, but it would be a victory for propaganda over feeble policing, the rule of law, common sense, scientific evidence and the kind of forward-looking energy policy that Britain sorely needs.

Balcombe’s uninvited guests are opposed to hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, in search of gas. As it happens Cuadrilla is looking for oil in West Sussex, not gas, but the protesters have not let such details trouble them so far and have shown a similar lack of interest in reality even in the debate on their chosen subject of fracking for gas.

VIDEO OXFORD UNION DEBATE: Climate change: Fact or fiction?

Climate change realist Prof. Richard Lindzen is challenged on his view that concern about global warming is alarmist.

Professor Richard Lindzen, a professor of meteorology and atmospheric physicist at MIT, the Massachusetts’s Institute of Technology, is perhaps the world’s leading climate scientist.

RUSSIAN SCIENTISTS WARN LITTLE ICE AGE

WILL LAST 200 YEARS

The next big freeze could last 250 years: Experts say Sun's activity wanes every 200 years - and the next 'cooling period' is due by 2040

  • Russian scientists believe the Sun emits less heat every 200 years
  • Cooling period could cause Earth's temperature to fall by several degrees
  • Last time was between 1650 and 1850, known as the ‘Little Ice Age’
  • The period of low solar activity could start between 2030 and 2040

"Russian scientist Dr Habibullo Abdussamatov, of the St Petersburg Pulkovo Astronomical Observatory, painted the Doomsday scenario saying the recent inclement weather simply proved we were heading towards a frozen planet.

Dr Abdussamatov believes Earth was on an “unavoidable advance towards a deep temperature drop”. The last big freeze, known as the Little Ice Age, was between 1650 and 1850."

DO YOU STILL WANT TO PAY A TAX TO STOP GLOBAL WARMING?

ACT NOW!

STOP THE CLIMATE SCAM!

From 1 April 2013 Chancellor George Osborne will impose a Carbon Price Floor to prop up the failed EU Emissions Trading Scheme. This carbon tax will make fuel, energy and transport even more expensive.

Government budgets have set the annual levy for each tonne of CO2 emitted at 4.94 pounds from April 2013 and 9.55 pounds in April 2014.

This CARBON TAX could add a further 798 million pounds to the carbon bill for UK utilities in 2013/14, taking the total bill to almost 2.3 billion pounds.
